Immediate Effect of Complete Denture Occlusal Errors on Masticatory Muscle EMG Activity in Denture Wearers: A Pilot Study

In the last three decades, little scientific progress has been seen in relation to the occlusal aspects in complete dentures. Equal distribution of loading forces to the edentulous denture foundation is an important factor affecting stability, patient comfort and acceptance of complete dentures. Also, understanding the functional behavior of masticatory muscles for complete denture wearers is important for diagnosing and planning the clinical treatment. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of unilateral and bilateral occlusal interferences on the masticatory muscle activity in edentulous patients, and how patients respond to occlusal interferences both physiologically and psychologically over a brief period of time. In ten subjects rigid bilateral intercuspal interferences were placed on the most distal teeth of the mandibular complete denture. Subjects were asked to clench maximally and the surface EMG of the right and the left masseter and the temporalis muscles were recorded. Bilateral interferences were removed and the subjects were divided into two groups. Group A received unilateral right interference and group B received unilateral left interference. Surface EMG of the right and the left masseter and the temporalis muscles was recorded at maximal clench. Occlusal interference was removed for both the groups and final EMG recordings were made at maximal clench for all patients. Patients responded to questionnaires after each intervention and finally after removal of occlusalinterference. Student’s paired T test was used to analyze the data. Results demonstrated no significant difference in EMG values of the patients at baseline and after the introduction of bilateral interferences. There was no significant difference in the EMG values of patients at baseline and after the introduction of unilateral right interferences. In the 5 patients with unilateral left occlusal interferences there was a significant reduction in the EMG activity of the left masseter. There was also no significant difference in the EMG values at baseline and after the removal of occlusal interferences. The analysis of the questionnaires did not reveal any significant finding

Incidentally Detected Ectopic Thyroid in Juxta Cardiac Location—Imaging and Pathology

Ectopic thyroid gland is a developmental anomaly that results from the arrest of thyroid tissue along its path of descent from the floor of mouth to the pre tracheal position in the lower neck. It is typically found along the thyroglossal duct with the base of the tongue being the most common site. Apart from mediastinal extension of goiter, the incidence of true intrathoracic ectopic thyroid tissue is rare. Presence of ectopic thyroid has been reported not only in the chest but also in the abdomen and pelvis. Pericardial and intracardiac locations are extremely uncommon and right ventricle location is predominant among the described cases. We describe a case of incidentally detected ectopic thyroid tissue in a rarer location—adjacent to the left atrium. The patient, who had undergone a nephrectomy for renal oncocytoma 5 years ago, presented with unintentional weight loss and left sided flank pain, prompting a workup to rule out abdominal malignancy. Findings on the computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis prompted further investigation including a chest CT which showed a heterogeneously enhancing mass near the left atrium. Given its location, further radiological investigations played an important role in eliminating the differential diagnosis of paraganglioma. The mass was surgically resected and discovered to be a hyperplastic thyroid nodule on histologic examination

Angulated Implants for Fabrication of Implant Supported Fixed Partial Denture in the Maxilla

Until recently, angled abutments have been the only solution to correcting the trajectory of the emergence profile of labially inclined implants in the maxilla. However, the clinical implications of angled abutments reveal several shortcomings. Newly designed angulated implants with a 12-degree restorative platform angulation are an alternative to angled abutments. The purpose of this article was to report a case utilizing new angulated implants (Co-axis, Keystone dental, Burlington, MA, USA) in the premaxilla thereby facilitating fabrication of a multi-unit implant retained fixed dental prosthesis

Fabrication of new restorations with a consideration of oral hygiene

Maintenance of adequate and effective oral hygiene is crucial for the long-term success of any dental therapy. This article discusses a case that failed due to the poor oral hygiene of the patient. Fabrication of uncomplicated restorations, patient education, motivation, maintenance and recall are important factors to be considered when treatment planning patients with poor oral hygiene

Reconnoitring the association of nutritional status with oral health in elementary school-going children of Ghaziabad City, North India

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between anthropometric measurements and oral health status in the primary dentition of school-going children. Materials and Methods: In this study, 280 elementary school children (116 girls and 164 boys, age: 3-6 years) were examined. Body mass index (BMI) of each subject was calculated and compared with age and gender using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) pediatric growth charts. Based on these growth charts, the sample population was distributed into three groups: Group I: Normal weight (5 th -85 th percentiles), Group II: Risk of overweight/obese (>85 th percentile), and Group III: Underweight (<5 th percentile). Each subject was examined for caries frequency (decayed and filled primary teeth (dft) values) and plaque status (plaque index (PI)) and these values were compared with their BMI figures. Results: Among the study group, 58.3% of children were suffering from malnutrition. Out of the total population, 33.9% had caries affecting their primary dentition. The largest section (39.5%) of caries affected children was underweight. The mean number of dft in Group II was highest at 1.47 ± 2.77 followed by Groups I and III, respectively. The mean value of PI in Group III was highest at 0.33 ± 0.53 followed by Groups II and I. Conclusions: A definite correlation was observed between the oral health status and BMI of elementary school-going children

Bohr Radius Problems for Some Classes of Analytic Functions Using Quantum Calculus Approach

The main purpose of this investigation is to use quantum calculus approach and obtain the Bohr radius for the class of q-starlike (q-convex) functions of order α . The Bohr radius is also determined for a generalized class of q-Janowski starlike and q-Janowski convex functions with negative coefficients

Aim: The aim and objective of this invitro study was to determine antimicrobial activity of root canal sealer (AH Plus, Sealapex, MTA Fillapex) against Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and Methods: Three different commercially available root canal sealers namely - AH-Plus (Dentsply), MTA Fillapex (Angelus, bioceramic sealer) and Sealapex sealer (Kerr) were evaluated for their antimicrobial potential against Enterococcus faecalis (E.faecalis )using agar diffusion method. Wells were formed in the agar plates by removing agar at equal distance and then, filled with the endodontic sealers- AH Plus, Sealapex and MTA Fillapex. Standard antibiotic disc of co-trimoxazole was kept as a control. Petri dishes were inoculated at 37 ℃ at a time interval of 24 and 48 hours. The diameter of growth of inhibition zone were measured by using Antibiotic zone scale (HIMEDIA). The difference between the groups were evaluated by one -way ANOVA and intergroup evaluation was done by Tukey’s post hic test. Result: AH-Plus sealer showed larger zone of inhibition as compared to sealapex and MTA Fillapex sealer against E.faecalis at 24 and 48 hours. Co- trimoxazole used as control exhibited the highest antimicrobial efficacy against E.faecalis at 24 and 48 hour. MTA Fillapex showed least antimicrobial action
